“Mathematics opens many doors but closes none”. Mathematics has always been integral to the development of civilisation. It underpins all aspects of our lives including engineering, technology, finance, the arts as well as informing political decisions. At St Richard Gwyn, we offer a stimulating, interesting and enjoyable curriculum with progress of all learners at the heart of every lesson. We nurture learner’s confidence and prepare them to become resilient problem solvers who express their ideas logically as they move into further education, the workplace and beyond.
KS3
At KS3 pupils follow a progressive scheme of work which is based on the national curriculum and the national numeracy framework. It covers the five main areas of Mathematics which are number, algebra, data, geometry and measure and numerical reasoning skills.
KS4
At KS4 pupils follow the WJEC exam board which builds upon the work covered at KS3. All pupils will sit two separate GCSE’s qualifications, a Mathematics GCSE and a Numeracy GCSE. The Numeracy GCSE is based on applying knowledge to problem solving and real-life questions and the Mathematics GCSE is based on using the procedural skills. Both GCSE’s consist of 2 examinations, Unit 1 which is non-calculator and unit 2 which is a calculator paper. The results for the 2 examinations will be added together to get the overall mark for that GCSE. There are 3 different tiers for each GCSE, Foundation, Intermediate and Higher. Foundation covers grades D – G, Intermediate covers grades B – E and Higher covers grades A*- C. Pupils who are targeted for an A or A* at GCSE will also have the opportunity to sit a GCSE in Additional Maths, which will help to prepare them if they want to go on to do Mathematics at A level.
