Learning Resource Centre

Every pupil is a member of the school's Learning Resource Centre.  Pupils will be taught how to find their way around the library section during Year 7.

The Library is open at break and lunch time.

Resources Available For Borrowing
The School Library contains an increasingly wide selection of books, videos, audio tapes and CDs for reference and borrowing.  These support and extend the curriculum.

Pupils may borrow a book for one week unless the book is on the short
loan list, in which case it may be borrowed for one day.  Books may be renewed for a further week/day if
they have not been reserved.  All books returned on time will earn one merit.  Overdue notices will be issued by form teachers during form period.  If pupils lose or damage books, contributions will be requested, so that books can be replaced.

Resources Available for Use
Pupils are able to use the computers at break and lunch time for school work only.
Photocopying facilities are available at a cost of 10p per sheet.
A cassette player is available for listening to audio tapes.

Student Librarians
Each year a group of pupils is needed to help run the library.  The school Resource Centre Manager will advertise for volunteers in the school bulletin and pupils will be given a trial period.  Their duties will involve shelving returned books, preparing books for the shelves, becoming experts in how to retrieve information from all our resources, helping other pupils to find resources and learning how to operate the library management computer programme.

Other Activities
Book ownership and the enjoyment of books are promoted and pupils have the opportunity to order books at discounted prices from Scholastic Book Clubs.

Groups of pupils are encouraged to shadow the Carnegie Medal which is awarded to the best book published for young people during the year.  They enjoy getting together to share their opinions about the books on the short list and register their vote.  The school has its own web page on the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) web site, where pupils send their reviews.  Details are published in the school bulletin when the short list is announced.

We are always happy to receive donations of books (fact and fiction), magazines, story tapes, videos,
CD ROMS and music CDs which can be used in the library or sold to raise funds for the library.

The library is also the main collection centre for any tokens that the school is collecting.
We have increased the number of resources available by participating in these schemes.

Look out for World Book day activities in the bulletin.  Do not forget to collect your £1.00 voucher from your form teacher.  In past years we have produced a prize winning PowerPoint presentation about books and authors.
